Goodwood is pleased to announce that the theme for the 2024 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will be ‘Horseless to Hybrid – Revolutions in Power’, celebrating the essence of our love affair with motorsport. From the birth of organised competition, 130 years ago, with the Paris-Rouen Trial of 1894, the quest for speed has gone hand-in-hand with developments in engines, propulsion and power. The 2024 Festival of Speed will celebrate the many thrilling advances that have propelled us to where we are today, and look at what new ideas may drive us into the future.
The entry list for that Paris-Rouen event, on Sunday 22 July 1894, included vehicles powered by everything from steam, petrol and electricity, to gravity, compressed air and hydraulics, reflecting the fact that, in the early years of the ‘horseless carriage’, there was no consensus as to the best power source. After a century dominated by the internal combustion engine, we once again find ourselves at a crossroads, with electric, hydrogen, hybrid and sustainable fuels all offering potential solutions for a greener future. As well as remembering how far the automotive and motor racing industries have come in the past 130 years, ‘Horseless to Hybrid’ will, crucially, look ahead at what comes next. The theme will be reflected throughout the event, from the cars and drivers taking to the renowned Goodwood hill to immersive experiences in Future Lab presented by Randox, exhibiting some of the most innovative new technology.
The Festival of Speed has long championed emerging technologies. In 2023 we welcomed four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel as he drove his ex-Nigel Mansell 1992 Williams FW14B and ex-Ayrton Senna 1993 McLaren MP4/8 on sustainable fuel. Vettel brought his “Race Without Trace” campaign to Goodwood, encouraging the adoption of alternative fuels by both the motorsport industry and wider world. In 2024 the Goodwood Revival will serve as a landmark moment in motorsport history, as the entire weekend of historic racing is set to take place using sustainable fuel. The theme for this year’s Festival of Speed emphasises Goodwood’s commitment to the future of mobility at its headline motorsport events.
Alongside this central theme, the 2024 Festival will mark a number of other significant anniversaries. We will remember the incomparable Niki Lauda, in the year he would have celebrated his 75th birthday, as well as 50 years since his first grand prix victory and 40 years since the last of his three World Championships. We will also honour the legendary Shadow team, 50 years after they won the final Can-Am championship, and Joest Racing, 40 years after their first Le Mans win, with many more celebrations to be announced in the coming months.

Indy Autonomous Challenge announces return to 2024 Festival of Speed with landmark autonomous challenge
- Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard continues to champion the future of mobility and technology, under new FOS TECH brand strategy.
- Indy Autonomous Challenge will return to Goodwood as part of the event’s continued ambitions to diversify content.
- Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place Thursday 11 – Sunday 14 July.
Yesterday – Monday 8 January – the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that it will return to the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard this summer.
At the 2024 event, the IAC will extend its presence from the Future Lab presented by Randox, to the iconic Goodwood Hill to undertake a special hillclimb challenge that will be revealed in the coming months. As a competition designed to advance technology that accelerates the commercialization of fully autonomous vehicles and the deployment of advanced driver- assistance systems (ADAS), as well as a platform for students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and inspire the next generation of innovators, IAC is able to push boundaries and attempt the previously unattempted, which aligns naturally with the Festival of Speed’s evolving FOS TECH strategy.
FOS TECH brings together all the technology and future mobility content at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, encompassing the forward-looking aspects of the event, including the latest automotive machinery and alternative fuels, through to the world’s most intriguing and groundbreaking pioneers in Future Lab, and extensive STEM programme for 11-16 year olds.
FOS TECH aims to serve visitors, press, brands and digital viewers with immersive and accessible content, reinforcing the Festival of Speed as the platform to explore and celebrate a vision for tomorrow’s world.
Matt Hearn, Goodwood’s Head of Event Content and FOS TECH lead, said: “We are thrilled that the Indy Autonomous Challenge is returning to the Festival of Speed this year and help bolster our FOS TECH ambitions. We really hope FOS TECH encourages more organisations to demonstrate both static and dynamic elements at the Festival of Speed, creating memorable experiences for our fans.”
The Indy Autonomous Challenge first appeared at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed in Future Lab, an exhibit which brings together inspiring innovators who are at the very forefront of creating ‘Technology for a Better World’. The IAC exhibited as part of the ‘Mobility on a Mission’ showcase, with their car on display to promote the capability of autonomous racecars to event goers.
At the same time, members of three IAC university teams conducted numerous ground scans and digitally mapped the Goodwood hillclimb in preparation for this year’s exciting challenge.
Speaking at the CES press conference in Las Vegas, Paul Mitchell, IAC President, said: “We can’t wait to head back to Goodwood in July with the world’s fastest and most advanced autonomous racecar. Goodwood provides a historic venue to showcase the future of high- speed autonomous mobility and connect a global audience to the talented university teams developing cutting edge AI driver software. We’re excited to be a part of the Festival of Speed’s growing FOS TECH content and let people get up close to the latest and greatest in innovation and technology.”

Goodwood Revival to celebrate the legendary John Surtees
- Eight-time World Champion John Surtees to be honoured at the Goodwood Revival
- Celebration will bring together cars and bikes from the many disciplines he competed in
- Goodwood Revival takes place over the weekend of 6-8 September 2024
Goodwood is proud to announce that the exceptional career of John Surtees – to this day the only person to win World Championships on two and four wheels – will be celebrated at this year’s Goodwood Revival, taking place over the weekend of 6-8 September.
2024 marks 60 years since Surtees won his Formula 1 World Championship, and would have seen the eight-time World Champion celebrate his 90th birthday, this coming Sunday, 11 February.
Reflecting a truly extraordinary motorsport career – which included seven motorcycle World Championships between 1956 and 1960, the 1964 Formula 1 World Championship, and the 1966 Can-Am Championship – the tribute to John Surtees will include everything from 250cc, 350cc and 500cc motorcycles to Grand Prix winners, unlimited sports cars and GTs. In April, the 81st Members’ Meeting will assemble an incredible array of Can-Am cars, Surtees having won the inaugural championship with his eponymous team in 1966.
John Surtees is a key figure in the annals of Goodwood’s unique motorsport history. It was at Goodwood that he tested a car for the first time, in 1959. The following year, it was here that he made his four-wheeled debut in a Formula Junior Cooper, racing for Ken Tyrrell, at the 39th Members’ Meeting in March 1960, finishing a close second to none other than Jim Clark.
That 1960 season was remarkable. Having taken part in his first race on four wheels in March, he made his F1 debut in May, scored his first podium with second place at the British Grand Prix in July, and his first pole position at the Portuguese Grand Prix in August! All while fitting in around his two-wheeled commitments, where he won the 350cc and 500cc World Championships for MV Agusta!
In 1993, Surtees became a Patron of the very first Festival of Speed, utilising his extensive contacts to organise the motorcycle classes for the event and riding his 1952 Vincent up the Hill. Returning to race at the early Goodwood Revivals, ‘Big John’ entertained a new generation of Goodwood motorsport fans, as fiercely competitive in the RAC TT Celebration as he had been on the Circuit during its heyday.
Shortly after his passing in March 2017, the 75th Members’ Meeting paid a moving tribute to Surtees, on the anniversary to the day of that first race in 1960, with a minute’s noise reverberating through the paddocks and The Duke of Richmond leading a commemorative lap in a Team Surtees Lola T70.
We now look forward to honouring the remarkable achievements of an enormously talented driver and rider, as well as the life and legacy of a great friend of Goodwood.
HIDE’s Ollie Dabbous to cook at Goodwood Festival of Speed
Goodwood is delighted to announce that the new Surtees Pavilion at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will be curated by Ollie Dabbous, Co-Founder and Executive Chef of the Michelin-starred restaurant HIDE.
Providing uninterrupted views of the Goodwood hillclimb, alongside exemplary food and a relaxed atmosphere, the Surtees Pavilion will bring a modern twist to classic dining as Goodwood collaborates with Ollie Dabbous to deliver a menu defined by excellence.
Located at the heart of the Festival of Speed, the unique dining experience partnered with perfectly-crafted cocktails and a live DJ, will offer diners a healthy twist on summer classics. Priding itself on a farm-to-fork dining experience, all produce and ingredients used in the Surtees Pavilion will be carefully selected from the Goodwood Estate and local area, with Ollie on hand meticulously crafting each course.
The Pavilion takes its name from one of Britain’s most successful and beloved drivers, John Surtees – the only World Champion on two and four wheels. A great friend and supporter of Goodwood, Surtees served as a Patron of the very first Festival of Speed, organising the motorcycle classes for the event in 1993. Surtees’ legacy continues to inspire here at Goodwood and will be celebrated at our headline motorsport events this year, with John Surtees announced as the Goodwood Revival’s celebrated driver for 2024.
Goodwood is looking forward to working with Ollie Dabbous to provide a truly unique culinary experience at the Festival of Speed this year. Having trained at Le Manoir aux Qaut’Saisons, Ollie opened his first restaurant, Dabbous, in 2012 and has since launched the Michelin-starred HIDE Restaurant on Piccadilly in 2017, where he has become renowned for working with seasonal and high-quality ingredients, whilst showcasing contemporary cuisine and elegant design.
Ollie Dabbous, Michelin-starred chef and co-creator of the Surtees Pavilion menu, said: “Since I was a child, I have always loved cars and so by coming to cook for guests at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed, I am delighted to be combining my first passion, cooking, with what I’d like to be doing otherwise, watching (and sometimes driving!) incredible cars!”
The Duke of Richmond said: “Here at Goodwood we’re renowned for delivering exceptional experiences, so I’m delighted that Michelin Starred Chef Ollie Dabbous is joining forces with us at the Festival of Speed this year. His extraordinary skills and passion for high-quality ingredients aligns with our own values and gives us the opportunity to showcase the wonderful produce from our own Goodwood Farm. We look forward to welcoming guests to our new Surtees Pavilion (named after Goodwood Patron John Surtees) for the ultimate culinary fuelled experience at this summer’s Festival of Speed.”
Reservations are now open for the Surtees Pavilion and customers can secure their place at www.goodwood.com/hospitality/festival-of-speed/surtees-pavilion. More information about what is included in the package can be found at goodwood.com or by calling the Ticket Office on 01243 755055.
