THIS TRUCK CAN BE ANYTHING, EVEN AN SUV
It’s a Slate. A radically simple electric pickup truck that can change into whatever you need it to be – even an SUV. Made in the USA at a price that’s actually affordable (no really, for real).
The Slate Truck is an upcoming minimalist electric pickup from Slate Auto, a Michigan-based startup. Designed with affordability and simplicity in mind, it aims to be one of the most budget-friendly EVs in the U.S., with a starting price under $28,000 before incentives and potentially below $20,000 after federal EV tax credits. Slate Auto plans to commence production in Indiana by late 2026, with deliveries expected to begin shortly thereafter. Preorders are currently open, requiring a refundable $50 deposit.
Design & Build: A compact two-door, two-seat pickup measuring approximately 175 inches in length, making it smaller than a Ford Maverick. The body is made from unpainted gray polypropylene plastic, eliminating the need for paint and reducing manufacturing costs. This material choice also gives the truck a rugged, utilitarian appearance.
Powertrain: Equipped with a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Two battery options are available: a 52.7 kWh battery offering an estimated 150-mile range, and an 84.3 kWh battery providing up to 240 miles. Charging capabilities include AC charging at 11 kW and DC fast charging at 120 kW using the NACS connector.
Interior & Features: The base model, known as the “Blank Slate,” comes without traditional amenities like an infotainment system, stereo, or power windows. Instead, it features a universal smartphone mount, manual crank windows, and basic HVAC controls. This stripped-down approach emphasizes durability and user customization.
Customization: Slate Auto offers over 100 optional accessories, allowing owners to tailor the vehicle to their needs. Notably, there’s a kit available to convert the pickup into a five-seat SUV, adding rear seats, airbags, and a roll cage. These accessories are designed for DIY installation, fostering a sense of ownership and personalization.
Performance: Despite its minimalist design, the Slate Truck boasts a payload capacity of 1,430 pounds and a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds, making it suitable for light-duty tasks

WRAPPED, NOT PAINTED
With other cars, you pick your color when you buy it, and that’s it. With a Slate, you can pick your color whenever—and change it whenever. It’s the first vehicle of its kind designed to be easily wrapped. And wrap kits will start around $500, so it’s easy on the wallet, too. Go wild. Or not. It’s up to you.
BRING YOUR OWN TECH
Bring the apps you know and love to create the experience you want. Instead of a bulky, distracting, and quickly outdated infotainment system, a Slate can come with something simpler: a smartly designed mount that fits a phone or tablet and a holder for a portable Bluetooth speaker. Your Slate will age gracefully, because it’ll always have the latest tech—yours.

THE DAILY DRIVER’S DAILY DRIVER.
Most people in America drive around 37 miles a day. That includes commuting, grocery runs, errands, the works. With a Slate, you could do that four times on a single charge of our standard battery. And if you need to grab a charge while you’re on the road, with the Slate App, you’ll always know when and where to plug in.
A Slate comes with everything you need to charge at home, no need to buy anything extra. With the included charging cable, you can charge using a regular household outlet. If you have access to a 240-volt outlet (the kind of outlet used for dryers, stoves and other appliances), you can charge faster with Level 2 charging. Many EV owners choose to purchase an optional wall-mounted charging station, which can add convenient features like cable storage and Wi-Fi connectivity, but you don’t necessarily need one to charge at home.
