Body and suspension – the G-Class is and remains the GELÄNDEWAGEN.
- Outstanding driving characteristics on- and off-road
- “Trail,” “Rock” and “Sand” drive programs for off-road terrain
- New OFFROAD COCKPIT provides an overview of the most important data and functions for off- road driving
The suspension on the new G 550 features adaptive adjustable damping as standard for even more control during on- and off-road driving. The dampers better compensate for uneven road surfaces or terrain and withstand significantly greater damping forces than passive dampers. With roll and pitch stabilization, the system continuously regulates the damper characteristics depending on the driving situation and automatically reduces body movements. Various components of the adaptive adjustable dampers are designed to withstand extreme off-road conditions such as surging water, mud and dirt.
Electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering, which requires less energy than a hydraulically assisted system, is also equipped standard. Depending on the selected DYNAMIC SELECT drive program, the system provides a comfortable or sporty steering feel during road driving. Off-road, it delivers precise feedback with additional steering assistance.
13.9 x 1.2-inch brake discs are fitted on the front axle of the G 550. At the rear, 13.6 x 0.9-inch discs are utilized. An electric parking brake is fitted standard.
DYNAMIC SELECT with three additional off-road drive programs
With DYNAMIC SELECT, the driving experience of the new G-Class can be adjusted at the touch of a button. The system adjusts parameters for the engine, transmission, suspension, ESP® and steering depending on the drive program via the DYNAMIC SELECT switch on the center console. The “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Eco” and “Individual” programs are tailored for road driving.
Three additional drive programs are available for off-road driving. “Trail” offers optimized handling on gentler terrain with loose surfaces – for example on dirt or gravel roads. The “Rock” drive program is designed for driving on more challenging, uneven terrain with hard, rocky surfaces. In this program suspension and steering are calibrated to be firm. As a third off-road option, “Sand” offers improved driving dynamics through agility- enhancing interventions. The ESP® is specially tuned for sandy surfaces and provides greater driving safety during dynamic driving, for example during braking.
New OFFROAD COCKPIT
The redesigned off-road control unit takes drivers directly to the new OFFROAD COCKPIT. This provides an overview of the most relevant information for off-road driving in both the driver and central multimedia displays. This includes vehicle positioning, compass, altitude, steering angle, tire pressure and temperature, as well as the status of the differential locks. Content is displayed in various tiles, which can be changed using the direction arrows or by swiping. There are also buttons for quick access to vehicle functions relevant to
off-road driving.
“Transparent Hood”
The “Transparent Hood” function can be selected via the off-road menu in the central display. In conjunction with the 360-degree camera, it provides a virtual view of under the front of the vehicle to enable the driver to better recognize obstacles in the vehicle’s path. The function also helps the driver to properly assess crests, embankments and depressions that may no longer be visible through the windshield, if the angle is too steep.
Engine and transmission
- New 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine produces 443 hp and 413 lb-ft
- Improved response, more on-road comfort and reduced fuel consumption
The all-new Mercedes-Benz G 550 is powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with turbocharging via an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor, delivering 443 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. A 48-volt integrated starter generator (ISG) provides support at lower engine speeds with an additional 20 hp and 148 lb-ft.
9G-TRONIC automatic transmission
The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with torque converter is specially adapted to the needs of the G 550. The wide spread of gear ratios makes driving comfortable and quiet, especially at low engine speeds, while also optimizing efficiency. The transmission design and calibration ensure fast, smooth gear changes and also enables rapid intermediate spurts of acceleration. Three speed sensors allow for what is known as skip shifting, in which – depending on the driving situation – several gears are skipped. The shift behavior changes based on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT drive program. Drivers can also manually control gear changes using the DIRECT SELECT shift paddles on the steering wheel.
In the ECO drive program, the ECO start/stop function aids efficiency by switching off the engine when the vehicle is stationary. The coasting function also helps to reduce fuel consumption. The transmission clutch decouples as soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator pedal. As a result, engine speed drops to idle, and driving resistance reduced by the engine’s compression and friction forces in trailing throttle. The vehicle then “coasts” and briefly utilizes its own kinetic energy for propulsion. The transmission reengages once the driver depresses the accelerator or brake pedal.
Transfer case with off-road gear reduction
The transfer case is configured so that 40 percent of the drive torque is transferred to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear axle. Permanent all-wheel drive ensures excellent traction. The off-road gear reduction significantly increases torque at the wheels during off-road driving. It increases traction and reduces top speed to enable the new G 550 to master difficult terrain. The off-road gear reduction can be engaged with the transmission in neutral via the LOW RANGE button, at speeds up to 25 mph. The transfer case features a 1.00:1 ratio in the HIGH RANGE for road driving and 2.93:1 off-road gear reduction in LOW RANGE. It is possible to shift from LOW RANGE to HIGH RANGE at speeds up to 44 mph.
The intelligent multi-plate clutch ensures excellent maneuverability. It behaves like an automatically controlled limited slip differential and regulates the vehicle’s behavior while driving. It switches to a fixed lock with 100 percent locking effect when the switch for the center differential lock is actuated.
The locks on the front and rear differentials are designed as normal differential locks with 100 percent locking effect. These operate electromechanically and are fully networked. All locks can be engaged individually while driving in both LOW RANGE and HIGH RANGE. The vehicle automatically switches to the “Rock” off-road drive program when the locks are engaged. The switches for the three differential locks indicate which locks are activated, and the status is also shown in the multimedia display.
High level of safety – new enhanced driver assistance systems
- Active Steering Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist and Route-Based Speed Adaptation available on the G-Class for the first time
- Standard Driver Assistance Package with all available advanced assistance systems
The new Mercedes-Benz G 550 is available with the latest-generation driver assistance and safety systems2. Active Brake Assist (standard) uses sensors to identify a risk of collision with a vehicle travelling ahead, crossing or oncoming. If an imminent collision is detected, the system can alert the driver with visual and audible warnings. If the driver’s braking is insufficient, it can also assist by increasing the braking force to the appropriate level, and if there is no reaction, it can initiate autonomous emergency braking. Active Lane Keeping Assist (standard) can help the driver to stay in their lane. The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system (standard) can recognize critical driving situations at an early stage, provide warning and initiate precautionary protective measures. These include, for example, reversible belt tensioning or automatic closing of side windows or the sliding glass sunroof to help protect occupants. PARKTRONIC with Active Park Assist (standard) can actively assist the driver with backing the vehicle into a parking space and recognize suitable spaces at speeds of up to 22 mph.
The standard Parking Package with 360-degree camera provides a clear view of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings on the central display during parking and maneuvering. Images from four different cameras (front, rear and both sides of the vehicle) are combined to create a virtual 360-degree view from a bird’s eye perspective. In addition, the display also shows different viewing angles.
The Driver Assistance Package, equipped standard, bundles all available advanced assistance systems. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC helps drivers maintain a safe distance to other vehicles, among other things, by adapting to the speed of traffic ahead. Blind Spot Assist can provide visual and audible warning of other vehicles in the path of travel when changing lanes and reversing. When the vehicle is stationary, the exit warning function can alert drivers to approaching vehicles, including cyclists. Traffic Sign Assist can provide the driver with the posted speed limit.
The following advanced driver assistance systems are now available in the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class:
Active Steering Assist
Active Steering Assist supports the driver at speeds up to 100 mph with moderate steering intervention to help remain in the center of the lane of travel. In combination with the 360-degree camera, the system also features lane detection.
Active Emergency Stop Assist
Active Emergency Stop Assist brakes the vehicle to a standstill in its own lane if it detects the driver is no longer intervening in the driving situation. Belt tensioning and brake jerk provide the driver with final warnings before the brakes are applied.
Route-Based Speed Adaptation
The system helps adapt the vehicle speed to the route in combination with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC. The vehicle automatically reduces speed when approaching bends, junctions, roundabouts, tolls or exits, and then accelerates when appropriate.
