Volkswagen Reports 2024 Sales

Volkswagen delivers around 4.8 million vehicles worldwide in 2024

  • Volkswagen is defending its undisputed market leadership in Europe but also growing significantly in North and South America
  • Diverse customer needs are being met through extensive model portfolio comprising all drive types
  • Volkswagen has delivered around 500,000 units of the all-electric ID.3 to customers since the model series was launched
  • SUV trend sustained: new generation of the T-Roc arrives in 2025

Wolfsburg – Despite strong headwinds, Volkswagen delivered around 4.8 million vehicles to customers worldwide last year (1.4 per cent fewer than in the previous year). Volkswagen was again the clear market leader in Germany with a market share of 19.1 per cent, according to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Martin Sander, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, said: “Around the globe, 2024 was a difficult year with sluggish economic activity, political challenges and intense competition – particularly in China. Yet, we are beginning the new year with optimism. Not only do we have attractive products, but we are meeting the needs of a wide variety of customer groups with our extensive, diverse model range that covers all drive types.”

The brand also boasts a broad range of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Since launching the ID. family in 2019, Volkswagen has sold over 1.35 million ID. units worldwide, including around 500,000 units of the ID.3. Last year, Volkswagen sold 383,100 BEVs.

Undisputed market leader in Germany and Europe
In 2024, Volkswagen was again the clear market leader in Germany with a KBA market share of 19.1 per cent. The top 10 most popular vehicles include as many as five Volkswagen models: the Golf, T-Roc, Tiguan, Passat and Polo. Volkswagen also topped the German market in the BEV segment. Here, Volkswagen vehicles accounted for 16.3 per cent of new registrations, an increase of 2.8 percentage points on 2023.

Delivery figures for the regions around the world:

  • Europe: 1,254,500 deliveries (down 1.7 per cent year-on-year)
  • South America: 479,400 deliveries (up 21.1 per cent year-on-year)
  • North America: 592,300 deliveries (up 18.4 per cent year-on-year)
  • China: 2,198,900 deliveries (down 8.3 per cent year-on-year)

SUV trend sustained in 2024
SUVs were in high demand in 2024, both with conventional drive systems and as all-electric variants. These now account for 47 per cent of total Volkswagen deliveries – an increase of 1.4 percentage points on 2023. Once again, the Tiguan was the most popular SUV and best-selling model, followed by the T-Roc – ever since the sales launch of the compact crossover model, more than two million units have been sold. Volkswagen will launch the next generation of the T-Roc in 2025.

The Polo also provides cause for celebration this year – 50 years after its first model generation came on the market. To this day, Volkswagen’s small car remains very popular worldwide, with more than 20 million units already delivered. In Brazil, for example, a record-breaking 172,510 units of the Polo were handed over to customers last year.

Volkswagen tops UK sales for fourth year running

  • 8.52-per-cent market share makes Volkswagen the UK’s best-selling new-car brand
  • 166,304 new Volkswagen cars registered in the UK in 2024
  • Golf and Polo both among the UK’s best-selling cars in 2024

Milton Keynes – Volkswagen is the UK’s best-selling new-car brand for the fourth year running, as confirmed by figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

A total of 166,304 new Volkswagen passenger vehicles were registered in the UK in 2024. That’s 4,217 more than in 2023 and 41,000 ahead of the closest competitor. Today’s figures equate to a leading market share of 8.52 per cent for Volkswagen UK – matching the brand’s market share in 2023.

The Golf was Volkswagen UK’s best-selling model in 2024; its 32,370 registrations placed it at number six in the market overall, in a year when the model celebrated its 50th anniversary. The Polo was also among the top 10 best sellers in 2024 – just as it enters a year celebrating its own half century.

Model introductions in 2024 that contributed to these impressive results included the all-new ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer, new Passat and new Tiguan, as well as the revised T-Cross and Golf. Stylish new Black Editions and trims were also unveiled in 2024, including the ever-popular and value-packed Match variants.

The brand will expand its range in 2025 with the five- and seven-seat Tayron and the new T-Roc; the covers are also scheduled to come off the eagerly anticipated ID. 2all and ID. 2X electric cars.

Rod McLeod, Director of Volkswagen UK, said: “I am delighted that Volkswagen is once again the top-selling new-car brand in the UK – and with a healthy gap between us and the next closest brand in the market. The results announced today underline the quality and popularity of our range, and of course our fantastic network of Volkswagen Retailers, who continue to deliver outstanding customer service.

“The past 12 months have had many highlights, including Golf’s 50th anniversary, the re-introduction of Match trims, and glowing reviews and awards for new models including the ID.7, Passat and Tiguan.”

Deliveries of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in 2024 at same level as previous year

  • Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles delivered a total of 408,300 vehicles to customers
  • Significant growth for the Caddy, Multivan and Crafter
  • Large number of new models launched in previous year results in top range of products for 2025: trio of Multivan, ID. Buzz and New Transporter now complete
  • Internationalisation in 2025: ID. Buzz launches in six more countries, including Australia and Japan

Hanover, Germany, 10 January 2025 – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles delivered a total of 408,300 vehicles to customers in 2024. The delivery figures are therefore at the same level as the previous year (2023: 409,400). The Caddy, Crafter and Multivan in particular achieved significant growth in the past year.

“2024 was a challenging year with a very strong first half and a difficult second half,” says Lars Krause, member of the Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV). “We were not only able to maintain our market share internationally, but also to further expand it in some markets, which is a great achievement. In Europe, we are the clear market leader in the B segment of battery-electric vans with our all-electric ID. Buzz.”

Incoming order figures reflect success of ID. Buzz model campaign
The model enhancements for the ID. Buzz with the GTX version1, long wheelbase and, for example, the all-wheel drive version of the ID. Buzz Cargo showed the first signs of success in 2024. With incoming orders increasing by over 70 per cent compared with 2023, market acceptance of the expanded model range and attractively priced variants is positive. In 2025, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will continue to drive forward internationalisation and introduce the ID. Buzz in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Israel, Indonesia and Japan.

A strong finish for the Transporter 6.1
Production of the Transporter 6.1 ended in the middle of the year. “All customer orders were produced on time. It was a great team effort for which I would like to thank all employees,” says Krause. “I am also particularly pleased that we achieved strong growth of 44 per cent for our Multivan in 2024. At the end of the year, we handed over the first new California and new Transporter models to customers. The introduction of the new generation in the Bulli segment is thus now complete.“

Caddy remains on growth trajectory: 100,000 mark exceeded
After an increase of 13 per cent in the previous year, the Caddy once again experienced strong growth and, with an increase of 17.2 per cent, significantly exceeded the mark of 100,000 vehicles delivered. A total of 107,200 customers got their new Caddy in 2024, making the city delivery van the second strongest model in the VWCV range. In 2025, the Caddy will also enter the electric age: deliveries of the hybrid version with an electric range of up to 122 kilometres will begin this year.

2025: broad product portfolio and further internationalisation
With the host of new models introduced in the past year, the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles range has now been completely updated. This means that 2025 sees VWCV having the best and broadest product range in its history. With the new Transporter, the trio of ID. Buzz, Multivan and new Transporter is now complete – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles therefore offers every customer the right vehicle to meet their individual needs.

Lars Krause: “We are continuing to drive forward internationalisation and have the right vehicles for our customers’ requirements with our highly efficient combustion engines, new all-electric and hybrid versions. For example, we have already gone to the USA in 2024 with a starting volume of the ID. Buzz and are seeing very positive response to our electric icon here as well.” And further: “We have lots planned for the new year and our portfolio is better positioned than ever before. This is a good thing, as we are facing challenging economic conditions in which customers – both private and commercial – are thinking more carefully before making an investment.”

Deliveries by product line
In 2024, 28,700 ID. Buzz vehicles were handed over to customers. This does not include the market launch volume of 1,300 ID. Buzz vehicles for North America, where the ID. Buzz has been available since November 2024.*

With 148,300 units delivered to customers, the T series remains the VWCV model with the highest sales volume. The first 1,000 new Transporter vehicles have already been delivered in selected markets. In addition, the successor to the first-generation Amarok has already achieved 11,200 deliveries in South America*.
