Drivetrain, chassis and driver assistance systems

With the introduction of the extensively revised engine range, the new GLE models offer a more dynamic and nimble driving experience. Numerous technical innovations enhance agility from the outset, while delivering impressive pulling power even on country roads. At the same time, the engines are already designed to meet future emissions standards and provide the brand’s hallmark high level of acoustic and vibration comfort.

The new V8 in the top-of-the-range GLE 580 4MATIC is noticeably more responsive, especially in the partial load range. Output has increased from 510 to 530 hp. 553 lb-ft of torque (up from the 538 lb-ft previously) is available across a wide range of engine speeds – from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. The engine provides smoother power delivery and operates more efficiently.

In preparation for future emission standards, the V8 now uses a “flat-plane” crankshaft instead of the previous “cross-plane” design. The ignition sequence alternates between both cylinder banks. The injection system, exhaust aftertreatment with particulate filter, intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder head, and intake camshaft have also been optimized. In addition, Mercedes-Benz redesigned the compressor wheel and housing of the exhaust gas turbocharger. Two Lanchester balance shafts ensure exceptional refinement.

In the GLE 450 4MATIC, the six-cylinder engine is more responsive and offers an even more refined driving experience, with more available torque in the partial load range and peak torque increased to 413 lb-ft. A new, more powerful electric auxiliary compressor, cylinder head with optimized intake and exhaust ports, and modified intake camshaft form the basis for these improvements. Additionally, the combustion process and exhaust gas aftertreatment have been optimized.

The powertrain of the new GLE 500e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid is also based on this new inline six-cylinder engine and benefits from the comprehensive redesign. With a 74-hp increase in engine output compared to its four-cylinder predecessor, the new powertrain delivers an even more refined driving experience. The plug‑in hybrid model provides 106 km (WLTP4) of all‑electric range. Advanced technologies such as particulate filters and pressure tanks are now standard worldwide, underscoring Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to efficiency and future-ready performance.

The GLE 350 4MATIC is equipped with an improved four-cylinder engine (M254 EVO) and features enhanced performance and responsiveness through the introduction of an electric compressor.

The engines in the GLE 350 4MATIC, GLE 450 4MATIC and GLE 580 4MATIC are fitted with an integrated starter generator (ISG 2.0) that provides intelligent support at lower engine speeds. When combined with turbocharging, this ensures outstanding power delivery. The system includes a 48-volt electrical system, which enables functions such as coasting, boost and recuperation to maximize efficiency. The ISG also allows for operation of the start-stop function and the transition from coasting with the engine off to powerful acceleration with engine power to be almost imperceptible to the driver. The intelligent interaction between the ISG and the engine also ensures exceptionally smooth operation at idle.

4MATIC all-wheel drive: off-road capability and on road agility

All-wheel drive has been a core tradition at Mercedes-Benz for over 120 years. Since the introduction of the 4MATIC name in 1985, the system has been continually refined to meet the highest standards for driving stability, safety, and dynamic performance. The advantages of 4MATIC extend far beyond off-road capability with enhanced traction for all driving situations. On road, 4MATIC provides increased agility as well as outstanding driving stability and safety.

All 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE models are equipped as standard with 4MATIC fully variable all-wheel-drive (Torque on Demand). The system continuously adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear axles, from 0 to 100 percent, depending on the driving situation. Torque distribution is adjusted as needed by the electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, taking into account a variety of factors. This ensures 4MATIC delivers sporty and stable handling, even on varying road surfaces.

Torque on Demand ensures the best possible traction, even on ice and snow. The physical operating principle of the clutch corresponds to that of a center differential lock. During dynamic driving maneuvers, maximum lateral stability at the front axle can be assured by reducing the drive torque at the front wheels.

The new transfer case also has a positive effect on longitudinal dynamics and ride comfort, as engine torque no longer needs to be reduced for the purposes of load reversal damping. The transfer case has a low range reduction gear with a ratio of 1:2.93, which allows even higher torque transfer to the wheels. When operating with inter-axle locking, this ensures optimum traction at both drive axles when driving off-road, especially on sand and rocky terrain. In addition, power output can be more finely controlled when off-road, especially at low and crawling speeds.

Balanced ride comfort and agility

The standard suspension and available AIRMATIC air suspension deliver a modern, well‑balanced driving experience. With firmer, sportier tuning than before, both suspensions combine enhanced agility with a high level of ride comfort.

One of the most intelligent suspension systems: E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL

Active suspension systems have a long tradition at Mercedes-Benz. More than 40 years ago, research was already being conducted on spring and damper systems that would allow the power at each wheel to be individually controlled. The objective: to improve both ride comfort and vehicle dynamics. ABC (Active Body Control) first entered series production in 1999. In subsequent years ABC was continuously developed further, with the ROAD SURFACE SCAN function added in 2013 to produce the first predictive suspension that already responds to surface undulations before these are reached.

Optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL for the GLE 580 4MATIC continues this tradition. Developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz, the suspension system is based on the AIRMATIC air suspension and keeps the vehicle level, regardless of payload. It allows the vehicle to be raised to increase ground clearance or lowered. Different levels can also be selected in special off-road driving modes.

With five multi-core processors and more than 20 sensors, optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL for the GLE 580 4MATIC responds predictively to any driving situation and enhances the driving experience. Control units analyze the driving situation 1,000 times per second and adapt the suspension accordingly. As a result, E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL enables a wide range of handling characteristics. With the DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, customers can have the suspension prioritize maximum ride comfort or dynamic agility. The system can individually control the spring and damper forces on each wheel to counteract roll, pitch and lift movements, culminating in a body that no longer dips under braking and acceleration.

The advanced suspension also enables the following functions:

  • Free-wheel mode: If the vehicle is stuck in a sand dune, this mode, which is only available in the Off-Road drive program, can help to free the vehicle more easily. Where possible, the level is automatically raised and lowered several times, which alternately increases or reduces the pressure of the wheels on the ground to improve traction and effectively rock the vehicle free.
  • Individual wheel control: After selecting the Off-Road drive program, the suspension level can be adjusted individually for each wheel via MBUX. This improves the vehicle’s alignment on rough terrain, for example if a wheel is stuck in a ditch or fully compressed.
  • Rear lowering during loading/unloading: At the touch of a button, the rear of the vehicle can be lowered by more than 2 inches for easier access to the rear cargo area for loading and unloading.
  • E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL operates at 48 volts and can even recuperate electrical energy on rough roads, making the system particularly efficient. The 48-volt motor-pump units on all four wheels are controlled by a central control unit.

Next generation driver assistance

The new GLE is equipped with a new, water-cooled supercomputer processor with sufficient power reserves for future functions. Each model is fitted with ten exterior cameras, up to five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors. These sensors work together with a powerful control unit running MB.OS. Artificial intelligence processes the sensor data to assess the driving situation.

The standard suite of driver assistance technologies includes MB.DRIVE Standard as well as additional features like Digital Extra: Distance Assist DISTRONIC2. Optional Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE ASSIST2 and Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO2,5 offer expanded driver assistance functions. The “CITY PRO” feature that enables a seamless point-to-point driving experience, even in dense city traffic, will be available at a later date.

The standard Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST2 can better and more quickly detect parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle. It also detects spaces that are not marked by white lines. In addition, the system can now assist with leaving a parking space – even when the vehicle was previously parked manually. If the function is activated, the system automatically carries out the parking maneuver.

The Digital Extra: Reverse maneuvering function2 enables the vehicle to automatically reverse along part of the route most recently driven, with system support available under certain conditions. While this feature is active, the image from the reversing camera and a graphic representation of the planned route are displayed on the central display.

Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 3602 with 360 degree camera for enhanced surround view displays also fitted as standard. Digital Extra: Rim protection warning2 displays a top‑view distance alert when maneuvering in tight spaces, helping the driver avoid damage to the wheels.

Ready for adventure: Active lifestyles meet maximum comfort

Intelligent suspension, panoramic sunroof and flexible interior

The latest evolution of the available AIRMATIC air suspension features new intelligent damping control providing noticeably greater ride comfort. This new smooth, sophisticated driving experience is the result of cutting-edge suspension technology. Once the intelligent damper control function is activated, the damping is automatically adjusted shortly before the vehicle reaches speed bumps. This increase in comfort is particularly noticeable for rear passengers. Mercedes-Benz developed the function itself and has applied for a patent.

The damping adjustment is based on “Car-to-X” information8 from Mercedes-Benz vehicles driving ahead, which is transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Cloud in real time via the mobile network and anonymized. “Car-to-X” refers to communication between vehicles. By leveraging the sensors of other cars, the technology significantly extends the coverage area of the vehicle’s own radar and camera systems, effectively enabling the vehicle to “see around corners.” The predictive intelligent damper control is included with both AIRMATIC air suspension and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL active suspension.

Large panoramic sunroof now standard

All new GLE models are now fitted standard with a panoramic sliding sunroof. With over 10.8 sq ft of glass, it is among the largest of its kind in a production SUV, featuring glass panels that span the full width and length of the roof. At the touch of a button, the front section raises and slides over the fixed rear glass panel. The glass roof offers a clear view of the sky from every seat, including the optional third row. A standard power adjustable roller blind provides shade from the sun for the full length of the panoramic roof.

Flexible interior, optional third row of seats

The spacious interior can be easily adapted to any lifestyle. Optional power adjustable second row seats enable the seats to be adjusted fore and aft separately by up to 3.9 inches and folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio. The backrests can also be adjusted by 18 degrees. The settings are operated via the switch in each rear door. The rear seat backrests can also be folded down via a separate switch panel in the trunk. Access to the optional third row of seats is provided by the power easy‑entry function, which opens up the passage to the third row at the touch of a button.

Cargo space ranges from 22.25 cu ft behind the rear seats (up to 29 cu ft with power adjustable rear seats) to 72.6 cu ft with the second row folded flat.

High towing capacity provides the capability to transport boats, horse trailers, and large caravans

With a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 lbs, the GLE can tow boats, horse trailers or other types of trailers with ease when equipped with the optional trailer hitch.

ESP® trailer stabilization provides support when towing. When the system detects trailer sway, it applies targeted braking interventions to counteract the movement, up to and including braking the entire vehicle‑trailer combination. Once the trailer’s oscillations have settled, the system automatically disengages. The AIRMATIC and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension systems also automatically adjust to the connected trailer and regulate vehicle height and damping accordingly.

New electric cabin air filter

With optional ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL, the new GLE continuously works to purify the air for occupants – completely renewing the interior air for all occupants approximately every 90 seconds3. At the heart of the system is an advanced, multi-stage filtration concept with an electric filter, ensuring exceptionally clean air and further reducing unpleasant odors. The incoming outside air is effectively cleaned using this multi-stage concept. In the first stage, the outside air passes through a pre-filter that traps larger particles from the airflow. Next, an electric filter ionizes fine dust particles, enabling excellent filtration at the interior filter. While the pre-filter only cleans the outside air in the first filtration stage, the interior filter is also active in recirculation mode.

ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL intelligently monitors air quality inside and outside the vehicle using fine dust and air quality sensors. Through the intelligent networking of sensor data, the system detects nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and fine dust particles of size PM2.5 in the outside air. PM2.5 particles have a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less, which means they can only be seen under an electron microscope. When the air quality and fine dust sensor readings reach a certain level, the climate control system automatically switches between fresh air and recirculation mode.

Efficient windshield cleaning with MAGIC VISION CONTROL

Available on the GLE for the first time, optional MAGIC VISION CONTROL provides efficient, intensive cleaning of the windshield. When the vehicle is stationary and temperatures are above freezing, an intensive cleaning program can be started by pressing and holding the wash button. Nozzles in the wiper blades first spray the entire wiping area with washer fluid. The wiper blades then remain in this upper position for approximately 30 seconds. This softens stubborn dirt, allowing it to be wiped away effortlessly.

Burmester® sound presented in an elegant design

The available new Burmester® 3D Surround Sound system with Dolby Atmos9 provides an immersive audio experience. The sound system comprises 15 speakers, including two new 3D speakers in the roof control unit, and a 710-watt amplifier (increased from the previous system’s 590 watts). The premium sound system also visually stands out thanks to its elegantly designed speaker grilles with Burmester® branding and exclusive presentation within the MBUX infotainment system. All settings are clearly grouped together in a separate premium sound tile.

In addition, the premium sound package opens additional functions such as Dolby Atmos9 and ‘Personalized Sound’, ensuring an even more immersive listening experience. In the ‘Personalized Sound’ menu, alongside the classic equalizer function, there is also the option to choose ‘Personal’. Here, a digital setup assistant can be launched. Through six simple questions, this intelligent tool creates a sound profile that’s precisely tailored to individual listening preferences. For example, it asks how prominent the high tones should be, the desired volume for the beats and the preferred bass characteristics. Intuitive, easy-to-understand icons, such as a violin or a drum set, make it clear what each question addresses, even without any musical background. Based on these responses, an intelligent algorithm then calculates the ideal individual sound experience.
